When I started in this business, I worked on all of my sales skills, read all of the sales books - because that's what everyone told me that I needed to do. The problem was, I never felt comfortable being a salesman. After working with dozens of buyers I decided to try something new. One day I just stopped trying to make the sale. I cut out all of the high-pressure closes, sales techniques - anything that was intended to entice my clients to buy a home. Some interesting things started to happen:
- I felt better about what I was doing - I had switched from being a salesperson to a counselor.
- Buyers felt more comfortable working with me - they didn't have to worry about me "selling" to them.
- My clients trusted me and trusted my advice because they could tell that I cared about them.
One of the most interesting things was that the amount of business I did almost doubled. When I stopped trying to force things - when I stopped trying to make the sale, my business didn't go down - it actually went up - by a lot! Plus I was hapier and so were my clients. I continued to build on these ideas to develop a program for home buyers that I'm happy to invite you to join.
